It amazes me that you rewrite at all. I've always been the sort to just write, and leave it at that. I don't like drafts. They bore me after awhile, and I'm terrible at editing my own work. Which is why I typically try to have someone else do it for me. ;
In the line of academia I'm in, I've sort of had to learn to re-write, especially for the big proposals where they give me money. Over the years, I've figured out how to zoom in on very interesting things in my work, and expand a B paper to an A paper, or a reasonable proposal to a "We are excited about your project" proposal.
While origionally I didn't re-write that often, and looked down on those who did, I think it's simply something that needs to be done a lot of times. Especially with computers; before, with a typewriter, you would sit down with things already formed in your mind, to express. With the computer, you can edit on the fly, which can sometimes cause problems (which require rewrites).
Rewriting is also why I have so many projects floating around. After I get to a stopping point with one thing, I go back to another project. When I come back, I re-read and take notes on the old piece, and go from there.
